ScoreSpace is a video game publisher fuelled by Game Jams. One of their goals is to uplift members of the independent development community by running game jams. Every month developers have 72 hours to make game prototypes based on the theme and game mechanic.
The ‘PolyMars x ScoreSpace Jam’ took place from July 26th to July 29th 2024. There were a number of rules for this Jam to make the games accessible to speedrunners. The top 20 games were livestreamed by the Youtuber PolyMars.
We were only able to participate for 48 hours of this Jam, therefore unable to fully realise our vision for this game. We had planned to make cutscenes bookending the gameplay which would insinuate that each death was the start of another knight’s journey. The torches of your previous lives light the way for your future glory. We also wanted the second half of the game (escaping after stealing the crown) to have a cutscene where the dragon superheated your armour, giving you additional speed for the climb.
There are also a number of known issues which we hope to fix in the future :
- Timer does not stop, the goal is to escape with the crown
- Missing the 'overheat' of armour when dragon attacks
- Checkpoints only work forward toward the crown
- Water does not appear visible until you have died once
- Animations not active for Frog and Fish
- Some visual bugs with torches
- Missing Main Menu, Leaderboard, Credits and three planned cutscenes
Nevertheless, we’ve still had fun creating and playing this concept version of the game. It’s still possible to win, even with the bugs impeding progress. With more time we think this could be an interesting ‘rage-game’.
